  ALLEN Carol

Carol is one our most popular main presenters. She has a soothing voice that is perfect for hospital radio. She also has an excellent interviewing technique that puts her subjects at ease.

  BARRETT John

For over twenty years JB has entertained listeners with a wide range of music knowledge and presentation. Taking a brake from The Monday TLC and a past Association’s Treasurer John has played a pivaltal part in many productive fundraising events including the annual flag day..

BARWELL Bill

Taking a rest as main presenter on the Thursday evening TLC show, Bill is known as a Junior Wrinkly (!).  A strong believer in the principles of CHR, he is happiest in the wards talking to and cheering up patients. He had been involved with co-ordinating ward visits and helped train newcomers in the ways of collecting requests and checking bedside headsets.  He has a warm and friendly approach. Bill is also a lover of fast cars and planes.

As a broadcaster he likes to tell stories and has a growing list of impressive documentaries to his name. These include The Story Of The Spitfire, The Early Years Of Frank Sinatra and Colditz. 

An award winning presenter BB is also a former Chairman of the association .

BEVIS Michael

A local solicitor and founder member of Chichester Hospital Radio, Michael is still an integral part of the association. Although his broadcasting skills have been sadly missing in recent years because of work commitments, his experience has been invaluable to the continued success of the radio station.

In 2001 he was the second inductee to the CHR Hall Of Fame.

  BLAKE Chris

A member of CHR for almost ten years Chris is the voice of Friday’s late night Drifting and Dreaming show as well as being our roving reporter on Blake’s About. He has a relaxing style which is ideal for hospital radio

  BRADLEY James

James is a dedicated and hardworking member of the Thursday afternoon Staff Request programme with Colin Chatfield.

  BROADHURST Alan

Alan is another long serving member of our team. He is one of the main presenters of the OASIS team – our nightly non denominational religious programme.

His thoughtful presentation is ideal preparation for sleep.

  CARTWRIGHT Reg

After a spell as a co-presenter Reg took over the Friday night TLC show before switching to Monday’s Memorabilia programme from which he is currently taking a break. Reg enjoys playing music from the sixties and seventies and provides a nostalgic look back at the news of the era.

  CHATFIELD Colin

Action man Colin is a retired teacher. When away from the CHR mixing desk he enjoys skiing and yachting. He also likes mountain biking and took part in the City Of Chichester Ride last year, bravely completing the course despite falling badly.

Another whose quiet, informative voice is one of the most popular on the station.

CREW Pete

Since joining CHR in 1982, our Head Of Programmes has compared shows featuring many household names. These include Robbie Williams, Bob Geldof, Roger Taylor (Queen), Julian Lloyd Webber, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and blues legend B.B.King.

DENT Jill

Another integral part of the success of CHR, Jill has loyally served the association in several offices including Membership Secretary and Chairman. Having spent much of her adult life working for charity she is well suited to be one of our Vice-Presidents. In 2001 she was inducted into the CHR Hall Of Fame.

EDGELER Peter

Our former Station Manager regularly presents the Treble Top programmes (Thursday/Sunday). He can also be heard on BBC local radio reading traffic reports. His musical expertise has seen him win prizes on BBC Radio Two – move over Ken Bruce and Terry Wogan. (Some say he is related to Auntie Maud the dottie old lady who often pops up on Friday nights.)

Pete is still on the technical team and helps ensure that all aspects of our service is heard ranging from organising the technical requirements of our outside broadcasts to maintaining our computerised and analogue equipment in the studio.

Pete was responsible for originally setting up our computerised broadcast system.

Some of his much valued spare time is spent fronting one of our fundraising Roadshows.

FREEGARD Steve

Steve has always been interested in radio. Although only a member for a few years, he quickly proved his worth and was delighted to be appointed Station Manager in 2002. Although he has since stepped down from this role he continues to be an integral member of the technical team. His excellent knowledge of computers has also been invaluable in the compilation of our programming schedules and recent upgrades to the studios equipment and systems.

GIBBONS Louisa

Bubbly and infectious, she is an enthusiastic member of the association. She brightens up the wards whenever she goes visiting. A keen thespian she loves acting – almost as much as she loves listening to ABBA.

GRAY Malcolm

The Richard Gere of CHR. (Well their hair is the same colour !) Malcolm presents with his wife Jane, Shades of Gray, every Sunday afternoon and is also part of the Friday night TLC team. Malc is also used to working in front of live audiences as a club disc-jockey and this  is also our outside broadcast organiser.

  GRAY Jane

‘Lady Jane’ is the better half of the Shade of Gray team and is the calming voice on the Sunday afternoon team.

HARCOURT-KELLY Jon

After taking a break - during which he got married, had a family, moved abroad, appeared in the movies and came home again - Jon  returned in 2002 to the association he originally joined as a teenager. It was at CHR he met his future wife Maxine, so the radio station held many happy memories. One of our most entertaining presenters Jon presents the Sunday Breakfast Show.

  HAYWARD Bernard

Now a seasoned veteran with the association, Bernard’s presentation of the Opera based Variations programme has introduced many to the genre. His gentle informative manner compliments the music he loves so much. The former Cathedral Choirmaster is now an award winning presenter.

JENNER Colin

One of the longest serving and inspirational members of our association. He began as a schoolboy and has since played an integral part in our development. Has served the radio service in several offices including Membership Secretary and Head Of Programmes. These days he is the producer of the Chichester Area Talking News programmes and presents the breakfast show on alternate Saturdays.

KANE Marvin

The only American on our team. An active member of the Chichester Jazz Group, Marvin – a former native of New York City – is a co-presenter of The Jazz Programme on Saturday nights with Fred Wright. His voice was also regularly used by the Royal National Institute Talking Books For The Blind where he recorded over 200 titles.

KNIGHT Adrian

Our Saturday Knight Ride presenter, Adie is one of the most experienced of our broadcasters. Knowledgeable and adaptable, he has outstanding talent. Over the last decade he has presented a variety of shows including several live from the wards.

An experienced broadcaster and roadshow presenter who has been heard on other local radio stations. Adrian is also a member of our Outside Broadcast team.

KNIGHT Ken

Producer and presenter of our non-denominational religious programme, OASIS, Ken is another of our original team. His quiet, soothing voice has a calming influence on patients who find his words and messages comforting. His programmes can be heard every night at 10pm with a live service at 7.30pm on Sunday.

KNIGHT Michael

Brother of Adrian and fortnightly presenter of Knight Ride. He is an expert on Northern Soul and mod music of the sixties. An experienced roadshow and Outside broadcast presenter.

LAING Sarah

Committee Member Sarah can be found during the day working in a well known Chichester book store. In her spare time she can be seen ward visiting and co-presenting on the Sunday request programme. She has a superb knowledge of classical music which she has used in the production of the Carousel and Melodies and Classics Shows with George Smith.

MAKER Graham

A member since 1976, Graham is our Scrabble champion. He has a unique knowledge of words and their meaning. He is also one of our statisticians who regularly compiles our most requested records list.

MORRIS Paul

An experienced broadcaster who until recently was heard on BBC Southern Counties Radio presenting sports programmes and bulletins. He is the only presenter on local radio to enthuse about a team (Wolverhampton Wanderers) who aren’t even remotely local ! This hardworking author and lecturer is a former Chairman of the association who has played a huge part in its success.

  RICHMOND-O’NEILL Barbara

In 2002 Barbara began her own BookShelf programme on Wednesdays reviewing and talking about books. With requests and special guests including authors reading their own work, her programme has quickly gained a grateful audience. Her beautiful delivery has made this show a ‘must listen to.’

SHEPPARD Emma

Another of our younger presenters – University student Emma is a co-presenter on the On The Border show with her Dad Steve. She is also a popular member of the CHR Drama Group.

SHEPPARD Steve

The ‘Silver Fox’ is the roving reporter on BBC Southern Counties sports programmes sending back observations of matches from all over the county. A lover of all kinds of music Steve presents Perfect Remedy on Thursdays featuring beautiful music ideal for relaxing or meditating to and Afternoon Heat on Sunday afternoons featuring music and sport.

SHIELDS Phil

Sometimes known as ‘Prof’ for his incredible knowledge of trivia, Phil is also a very close friend of Gilbert The Gardener – a regular contributor on CHR. Phil is the Membership Secretary. Father of two he is totally dedicated to serving the patients and staff to continue the work of the association.

SMITH George

Relaxing music and thoughtful words are the trademarks of the man whose very tone has a calming effect on listeners. Not only does George produce and present Carousel and Melodies and Classics, he can also be heard on Sunday mornings on Words and Music.

WRIGHT Fred

A member since 1991, Arsenal fan Fred Wright is our jazz expert presenting the Jazz Show on Saturday evenings. His programmes provide a unique insight into the music and the musicians who made it. However he doesn’t restrict himself to just jazz as a musical pleasure, he also enjoys other types such as folk and classical.
